Egg Wars

A Girata-family tradition, hearkening back at least two generations (I played with my sister and my dad played with his siblings, too!), has been passed on to the next generation: EGG WARS!! Nicole told me that in her family, they eat the hard-boiled eggs they dye for Easter. Not so for the Giratas. Dyed eggs serve a higher purpose in our world. They are preserved to participate in the ultimate egg-fighting championship!

Here are the rules: each person picks a "team" of eggs with which they will compete. Then hit by hit, each player smacks one end of their egg into one end of their opponent's egg. Crack by crack, shell by shell, the eggs are destroyed until one champion egg (and player!) are left standing. This is by far the greatest family Easter tradition!

...and of course, I have pictures AND a video of all the fun!

Church Fun

The last week has been very busy for all of us -- that's what happens when you're in the church business. Here are some cute pictures of the kids from the past two Sundays that I thought you'd like.

First - Palm Sunday! This is one of the highlights of the year for me for two reasons: 1) we have a live donkey that joins the children in the palm procession at the beginning of the service (excited kids + live donkey, how can that NOT be fun?!) and 2) one of my favorite church families hosts a reception that features the "food that Jesus ate," where they bring loads of homemade middle eastern food (they're of Palestinian descent -- so it's like being back at my Lebanese grandmother's house!).

Officially in the Early 30s

Well folks, it's happened. I'm officially in my early thirties. I've been denying that for a year, claiming to "only be 30." But I cannot deny it anymore! My birthday was extra fun because of how excited the kids have become about birthdays. Where there used to be excitement because we were excited, they are now excited all on their own -- with weeks of countdown ahead of the big day! We celebrated at home the night before the big day since it would be spent at church (a Wednesday).

It was a great day. Thanks for all your love and well wishes!

A few more of Layna's day

Just a few more of Layna's birthday, and then I'll be ready to move on to my birthday ...I'll catch up soon, promise!

Layna woke up on her birthday to lots of gifts (and lots of love). She started with one gift during breakfast, then opened them all during her lunch party.

(Still) Layna's Birthday

Can you tell that I've lost some interest in blogging recently? Sorry about that... I never finished Layna's birthday pictures, so let's return to the show.

There were two big events that happened during Layna's birthday weekend -- a haircut and new earrings! Here are some pictures of the two events:

NOTE: I find it important to tell you that I was NOT present during this haircut. Why do I tell you that? -- because when you see the woman who is cutting Layna's hair, you may respond like me, wondering how someone who styles their own hair in such a way (and I use "style" loosely) is qualified to style another person's hair. But I digress...
